Bath Safety Is Key
The bathroom can be a dangerous place for anyone. It also has the potential become even more dangerous for people that have decreased mobility and unsteady balance. Did you know that the month of January is Bath Safety month? Well we would like to offer some ideas for easy fixes that will put your mind at ease.
First identify areas that may be hazardous including:
- Areas with the potential to become slippery.
- Avoid areas that may be difficult to move and reposition in.
- Make sure that all fixtures that you frequently use are in reaching distance.
Bath safety tips to prevent accidents:
- Use anti-skid flooring for better gripping.
- Keep the floor free of any water.
- Install grab bars to use when getting in and out of the tub.
- Use door locks that can be unlocked from both sides in case there is an accident.
Bath safety products that optimize security:
Transfer bench: This product is perfect for patients that have trouble lifting their legs into the tub. Half of the bench sits inside the tub and the other half sits outside. You sit on the end of the bench that is outside of the tub. Then you are able to lift your feet up more easily and safely into the tub.
Adjustable shower head: A portable shower head pairs well with any bath bench. This way you will have the ability to control the water flow from a seated position. This a safer option because you will not be standing on a slipper surface
Bath mat: Placing a slip resistant mat inside and outside of the tub is a great idea. Tubs can get very slippery when wet and unexpected water outside of the tub can be risky.
Grab bars: Grab bars provide a stable place for people to hold on to when inside the shower. They can also be used on the edge of a tub to assist in entering and exiting the tub. Grab bars come in all different lengths and materials, to accommodate many different needs.
Shower chairs: Using a shower chair can provide a safe place to sit while taking a shower. This product can also assist when washing areas like your feet. Instead of balancing while washing your feet it is much safer to be seated.
Bath lift: A bath lift can be a great option for a caregiver. The caregiver can easily transport the person onto the bath lift and lower them into the tub. Once the bath is given they can then be lifted out of the tub and dried off, all while being safely seated.
