What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapy (OT) is goal-directed treatment. People that may benefit from OT sessions include people whose ability to function is impaired by normal aging, illness, injury or developmental disability. Obtainable goals through OT include the improvement of functional freedom and prevention of future disability. Occupational Therapists improve upon these areas of daily life.
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): grooming, bathing, dressing, eating, and toileting
- Personal safety
- Upper body strength, flexibility and coordination
- Pain management
- Walking, transferring and balance
Therefore, the goal of OT is to prepare a person to live life to its fullest. With tools and guidance from a professional, a life of independence can be more obtainable.
I like that you say the goal of occupational therapy is to prepare a person to live life to it’s fullest. I had some nerve damage in my left hand from an accident and it seemed like I’d never be able to use it again. After occupational therapy it’s not 100%, but I know that I’m doing more than I could have without the therapy.
